wicked.jpgThis is both a rant and a response to Derek Sivers recent blog, Not happy with existing venues? Make a new one. In short, the blog suggests to do exactly as the title says. Make it a point to read it and don’t forget to leave him a comment as well. The following relates to my own personal experiences regarding this subject.

wicked.jpgYep, there’s a plan for that too! You should know by now that I have a plan for just about everything. “But can’t I just post a Myspace bulletin requesting sponsorship?”, you ask. “NO!”, I reply. Well, I guess you could, but soliciting through social networks will not likely land anything that will remotely affect your music career.

Let’s break this down:

A SPONSOR is the individual or group that provides the support.

TO SPONSOR is to support an event, activity, person, or organization financially or through the provision of products or services.

A SPONSORSHIP is a cash and/or in-kind fee paid to a property (typically in sports, arts, entertainment or causes) in return for access to the exploitable commercial potential associated with that property. An example being, Bud Light may provide the funds needed to build a stage for a music festival in exchange for brand recognition, and of course, exposure to potential paying customers.

shauna.jpgWhen our good friend and business associate, Shauna O’Donnell (MUEN Magazine/MUEN Talk), asked us to hook up with THE SAMMUS THEORY when they passed through Houston, we jumped at the chance.  Hank was able to catch them at Gary’s Spot and do a short video.  We’ve included that video here.  We later found out that another of her bands, PANDEMIC, were going to be at the Baytown Foozies gig.  Wicked D used that opportunity to put together this little article.  hope you like it!

wicked.jpgWICKED WORDS OF WISDOM, a monthly feature on Artist Development, brought to you by Wicked D’s Network, will follow the music biz ramblings of core founding member, Don ‘Wicked D’ Harrison.  Dubbed the Indie Metal Entrepreneur by ArtistsHouse Music, Wicked D unselfishly shares what he learns, living by his motto, Network or Die!

Most of you have heard of ‘The Secret’, a new-fangled approach to the Laws of Attraction. Unfortunately, it has been commercially packaged, then shoved down your throat like an infomercial. This alone drives many of you to scream “bullshit”.  I say new-fangled because the following quote has been stuck in my head for nearly 30 years, long before any of us found The Secret!

“You are never given a wish without being given the power to make it true. You may have to work for it, however.”

How does this relate to your music career?
